Times running out! There is only one week left to make your voice heard and provide Tribal Nations with a formal seat at the table in the Chesapeake Bay Program!
This month, we've been fanning out and delighted that partners across the watershed are supporting the Indigenous Conservation Council's request to be formal signatories of the major agreement shaping partnerships to care for and heal the Chesapeake Bay. We want to thank organizations like Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Chesapeake Legal Alliance, Choose Clean Water Coalition, National Parks Conservation Association, Potomac Conservancy, Virginia United Land Trusts, and many more for using their voice, petitions, and formal comment letters to support signatory status! Much gratitude and appreciation to all our partners and friends!
Earlier this month, we provided a presentation to the Chesapeake Bay Program's Principal Staff Committee on the ICC's goals, the phenomenal contributions of Tribal Nation members to Chesapeake Bay health, and the opportunities to come with Indigenous Guardians programs.
Missed the presentation? Check it out here:
We were also delighted to collaborate with Chesapeake Legal Alliance on a new law article that will be submitted to the National Sea Grant's Policy and Law Journal to highlight best practices in support tribal sovereignty in coastal watershed partnerships with opportunities for the Chesapeake Bay. Special thanks to Lauren Wiederkehr a summer law clerk who led the article, and contributor Connor Tupponce (Upper Mattaponi) who is now starting his first year at Mitchell-Hamline School of Law. We look forward to its publication!

We got a chance to share more about our partnership with Chesapeake Legal Alliance and our petition at a recent community gathering in downtown Baltimore at Patagonia's store. Special thanks to all the Patagonia folks who allowed us to also screen the short film featuring Chickahominy Indian Tribe-Eastern Division's recent workshop and hopes for Indigenous Guardians in the Chesapeake!
So click over to our petition, share widely with friends and family to ask them to do the same, and make your voices heard!
